    Invisible Cities

    INVISIBLE CITIES  inspired by Italo Calvino's " Invisible Cities" 

     "Art is not about reproducing what is visible but about making visible what is not" Paul Klee.

    Fascinated by this idea, I proposed to make real "The Invisible Cities" of Italo Calvino's book, in which the protagonist Marco Polo, having arrived in the East, is commissioned by the Emperor to describe the cities of his Empire and we, following his journey, are led to compare the complex crisis of archaic cities with that of modern metropolises.

    A serious crisis, which has manifested itself even more in recent times with the global problems of climate change, forcing us to revolutionize lifestyles and to launch the message of the urgent need for a balanced integration between the fragile natural environment that surrounds us and the urban agglomerations, orienting us towards more human-scale projects,  as already achieved by Pius II in Pienza, the "ideal city" of the Renaissance and the place of origin of my family.

    In the works of this series I tell the fragility of life in cities, creating surreal and metaphysical architectures and urban agglomerations that contain dreams, worries and memories out of time and in a space that can be anywhere.

    Those who observe them will be stimulated to take a journey with their imagination and to reflect on what cities, the centre of human activities and a mirror of social evolution, represent for each of us, questioning ourselves as citizens and communities in search of possible solutions towards a sustainable future.

    MyYSTERIOUS SYNAPSES

     The same mysterious fundamental law seems to exist in the branches of trees, in the veins of a leaf, in the threads of a spider's web, in the circuits of the nervous system, in the routes of traffic on the internet, as a common language that connects the microcosm with the macrocosm, the internal world with the external world, the same model that influences inert systems, biological, social and cultural.

    During my studies in biological sciences I glimpsed in the evocative microscope images of neuronal synaptic connections, the depiction of the intertwining of complicated and often incomprehensible human relationships, as well as the circuits of the network and the algorithms in the web that lead us to artificial intelligence and I came up with the idea of depicting them with my imagination by combining science and art in the same project.

     In the works of this series between the figurative and the abstract I have tried to capture the essence of neuronal connections that vibrate with energy, to arouse amazement and curiosity in the observer and to push everyone to reflect on the complexity of the mind and human relationships and on the magic of the origin of our thought.

     Art serves to give emotional resonance to the phenomena with which humanity must collide, in fact there are more and more artists who make their talent available to highlight the serious critical issues that afflict our planet and as a result of my profession as a biologist I also feel committed to actively participate to make the environmental problems of the climate crisis more understandable to everyone.

    This is how this project was born, in which Art and Science are intertwined, trying to visualize the consequences of this great and dramatic process that leads to the loss of natural beauty and life on our planet. The woods and forests, breath of the planet, have a great fascination for me and in the works of this series I compare their splendor with the results of global warming.

    Those who observe my works are stimulated to reflect on the complexity of the problems associated with climate change and pushed to consider the urgent need for all of us to commit ourselves to protect our planet from the damage of global warming, to paint a brighter future together.
